Lately, quality of education has improved in Tanzania, though the poorest and most vulnerable sections of the population, e.g. people with disabilities, have been left out of this progress.
Therefore, the goal of “A school for everyone” is to grant access to education to every child as a fundamental right and an opportunity to change.
Education is not a way to escape poverty,
it is a way of fighting it.

Education. Disability. Children’s rights.
The first step is the formation of all the assistants and teachers with the support of an équipe made up by an italian instructor and four tanzanian colleagues, previously trained thanks to precedent cooperation projects.
Then, it is also important to raise awareness on disability in the rural communities of Iringa. As a matter of fact, children with disabilities are often hidden because they represent shame and disgrace to their families. Thus, “Dar Creators”, a tanzanian theater company, performed a play on disability in four villages.
Finally, a mini-bus has been purchased in order to help the children that live far away from the school.

In the rural district of Iringa there are 132 kindergartens and 148 primary schools. There are also 754 children with disabilities and 1460 teachers of which only 58 teacher’s aide. However, these numbers can be underestimated because there are some children with disabilities, especially in the most rural areas, who do not attend school and who are not included in the official statistics.
There are several causes: the lack of training for teachers, all the preconceptions and superstitions that people with disabilities suffer, or the long distance from home to school and the lack of means of transportation.
